At the 2006 South Asian Games, the athletics events were held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 23 August to 27 August 2006. A total of 35 events were contested, of which 20 by male and 15 by female athletes. Rajendra Bhandari of Nepal won a 5000 metres and 3000 metres steeplechase double, but his sample delivered at the Games tested positive for Norandrosterone. He was disqualified from the event and banned from competing for two years. Jani Chathurangani Silva, the 100 m silver medallist, was also banned for Norandrosterone.
