Het was de eerste editie van de vrouwenmarathon bij de Olympische Spelen. De start vond plaats om 8 uur 's ochtends bij het Santa Monica City College en de finish bevond zich in het Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Ondanks 24 °C bleven negen vrouwen onder de tijd van 2,5 uur. De wedstrijd werd gewonnen door de Amerikaanse Joan Benoit in 2:24.52.
