The men's javelin throw at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games as part of the athletics programme was held at the Perry Lakes Stadium on Saturday 24 November 1962. The event was won by Australian Alf Mitchell with a throw of 256 ft 3 in (78.11 m), breaking his personal best by over a foot. Mitchell won by 6+1⁄2 in (17 cm) ahead of the defending champion, Englishmen Colin Smith and fellow countryman who won the bronze medal. Mitchell throw also set a new Games record, eclipsing the mark that Smith had set in Cardiff four years earlier. The previous distance of 233 ft 10+1⁄2 in (71.29 m) was also bettered by Smith, Birks and Pakistan's who finished in fourth position.
