Anne Elliot was persuaded, when she was 19 years old, to break off her engagement with Frederick Wentworth, a promising young lieutenant in the Royal Navy but a commoner without fortune, and she has never married. Lonely, unloved by a stuck-up and pretentious father and older sister, little considered by a family circle incapable of recognising her value, she leads a dull life of an almost-old maid. And yet here it is that, 7/8 years after the naval war with France ended, in September 1814, the young man whom she has never forgotten returns to England, having earned epaulettes, prestige and fortune in the navy. The first contacts are painful. He has retained an image of her as a person too easily influenced and she sees clearly that he is still angry with her. But at age 26/27, she has matured and gained enough independence from her family and social circle to choose her friends and her future. The posthumous novel by Jane Austen presents the portrait of an independent spirit, a young, intelligent and melancholic woman, sensitive and attentive to others, who regains her self-confidence when she is given a second chance to find happiness, a very different happiness from other Austenian heroines, since she marries neither a land owner nor a clergyman, but a ship's captain. She would be "proud of being the wife of a sailor" but she would also know its anxieties and its sorrows. Anne Elliot s'est laissée convaincre, lorsqu'elle avait 19 ans, de rompre ses fiançailles avec Frederick Wentworth, un jeune lieutenant de la Royal Navy prometteur mais roturier et sans fortune, et ne s'est jamais mariée. Solitaire, mal aimée par un père et une sœur aînée snobs et prétentieux, peu considérée par un entourage incapable de reconnaître sa valeur, elle mène une vie terne de presque vieille fille. Or voilà que, huit ans après, la guerre maritime avec la France terminée (on est en septembre 1814), le jeune homme qu'elle n'a jamais oublié revient en Angleterre, ayant gagné galons, prestige et fortune dans la marine de guerre. Les premiers contacts sont pénibles. Il a gardé d'elle l'image d'une personne trop facilement influençable et elle voit bien qu'il lui en veut toujours. Mais, à 27 ans, elle a mûri et acquis suffisamment d'indépendance par rapport à son cercle social et familial pour choisir ses amis et son avenir. Le roman posthume de Jane Austen présente le portrait d'un esprit indépendant, une jeune femme intelligente et mélancolique, sensible et attentive aux autres, qui reprend confiance en elle lorsqu'une seconde chance lui est donnée de trouver le bonheur, un bonheur très différent de celui des autres héroïnes austeniennes, puisqu'elle n'épouse ni un propriétaire terrien ni un clergyman, mais un officier de marine. Elle pourra se « glorifier d'être l'épouse d'un marin », mais en connaîtra aussi les inquiétudes et les chagrins. Elle est considérée comme l'héroïne austenienne la plus lucide et la plus responsable, et le lecteur a accès de façon privilégiée à ses pensées, d'une justesse et d'une finesse qui n'ont pas leurs pareilles chez les héroïnes des romans précédents.
