The 1889 World Allround Speed Skating Championships took place at 8 and 9 January at the ice rink Museumplein in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is the first World Allround Speed Skating Championships, it's unofficial because there was no International Skating Union (ISU is founded in 1892) Three distances were skated at the World Championship, the ½ mile (850 meter), the 1 mile (1609 meter) and the 2 miles (3219 meter). One became champion if one won all three distances. The Russian didn't win the final at the 2 miles and was not declared as winner due to the rules.

W zawodach brali udział tylko mężczyźni. Zawodnicy startowali na dystansach angielskich, czyli pół mili (805 metrów), 1 mila (1609 metrów) i 2 mile (3219 metrów). Do finału danego dystansu awansowało 4 najlepszych zawodników z kwalifikacji. W przypadku jednakowego czasu kilku zawodników rozgrywano dodatkowy bieg. Mistrzem świata zostawał zawodnik, który wygrywał wszystkie dystanse. Reprezentant Imperium Rosyjskiego, , po wygraniu dwóch pierwszych biegów, w ostatnim był drugi, więc zwycięzcy nie ogłoszono. De Internationale Schaatsunie (ISU) zou pas in de zomer van 1892 opgericht worden. De Internationale Schaatsunie (ISU) zou pas in de zomer van 1892 opgericht worden. Tot die tijd werden de (onofficiële) wereldkampioenschappen allround wel steeds op het Museumplein in Amsterdam georganiseerd. Het kampioenschap werd verreden over drie Engelse afstanden, namelijk de halve mijl (805 meter), 1 mijl (1609 meter) en 2 mijl (3219 meter). De beste vier in de kwalificatie plaatsten zich voor de finale van die afstand. Bij gelijke stand in de kwalificatie volgde er een skate-off tussen de gelijk geëindigden, zoals bij de halve mijl het geval zou zijn. Wie alle drie de afstanden won werd uitgeroepen tot wereldkampioen allround. De Rus Aleksandr Pansjin eindigde bij alle kwalificaties als eerste en eindigde ook als eerste bij de finales om de halve en hele mijl. In de finale van de 2 mijl moest hij echter de Amerikaan Joe Donoghue voor laten gaan, waardoor Panshin zich volgens de regels geen wereldkampioen allround kon noemen. (nl)
