After the coup against dictator Jesús Jiménez Zamora on April 27, 1870, and after the brief government of Bruno Carranza Ramírez, Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez succeeded on August 8 and elections were called by the then provisional president Guardia on 8 of May 1872. It was the first time that the presidency was exercised by a military.

- After the coup against dictator Jesús Jiménez Zamora on April 27, 1870, and after the brief government of Bruno Carranza Ramírez, Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez succeeded on August 8 and elections were called by the then provisional president Guardia on 8 of May 1872. It was the first time that the presidency was exercised by a military. For these elections the Constitution of 1871 was in force, which established that all Costa Rican males of 20 years of age or 18 if they were married or were professors of a science or whose income was according to their social condition, could vote. This allowed the majority of male citizens to vote (female suffrage was approved until 1949) since it did not required to know how to read or write and the economic requirement was very ambiguous and could be applied to almost any person of any social class. The vote was public and only chose the second-degree electors. The second-degree electors had to be over 21 years old, literate and had an annual income of 150 pesos or more or at least 500 pesos in property. (en)
- Las elecciones presidenciales de Costa Rica de 1872 se realizaron tras el derrocamiento del dictador Jesús Jiménez Zamora el 27 de abril de 1870, y tras el breve gobierno de Bruno Carranza Ramírez, sucedido por Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez el 8 de agosto, siendo electo el entonces presidente provisional Guardia para el período 1872-1876. Fue la primera vez que la presidencia era ejercida por un militar. Para estas elecciones estaba vigente la Constitución de 1871 la cual establecía que podían sufragar todos los costarricenses varones de 20 años o de 18 si estaban casados o eran profesores de alguna ciencia cuyo ingreso fuera acorde a su condición social. Esto permitía votar a la mayoría de los ciudadanos hombres (el sufragio femenino se aprobó hasta 1949) ya que no exigía saber leer o escribir y el requisito económico era muy ambiguo y podía aplicarse a casi cualquier persona de cualquier clase social. El voto era público y sólo escogía a los electores de segundo grado. Los electores de segundo grado sí debían ser mayores de 21 años, alfabetizados y poseer un ingreso anual de 150 pesos o más o al menos 500 pesos en propiedades (es)
