Figlio dell'avvocato Francesco Leone Tottola e di Margarita Rubino.Ha lavorato, tra gli altri, per Gioachino Rossini (Mosè in Egitto), Gaetano Donizetti e Giovanni Pacini. Ebbe tre sorelle, tra cui Vincenza, sposata al terzo barone di Corleto di Grima don Pasquale Cecconi fu Giovan Battista. (it)

Va començar a escriure llibrets el 1802, com a poeta oficial del Teatro San Carlo de Nàpols i de l'empresari Domenico Barbaia. També va escriure obres que van ser musicades per Giovanni Pacini, Saverio Mercadante, Johann Simon Mayr, Nicola Vaccai, Errico Petrella, Ferdinando Paer i Manuel García. (ca)
- Andrea Leone Tottola (died 15 September 1831) was a prolific Italian librettist, best known for his work with Gaetano Donizetti and Gioachino Rossini. It is not known when or where he was born. He became the official poet to the royal theatres in Naples and agent for the impresario Domenico Barbaia, and started writing librettos in 1802. For Rossini he wrote Mosè in Egitto (1818), Ermione (1819), La donna del lago (1819) and Zelmira (1822). Tottola died in Naples. (en)

Para Donizetti escribió siete libretos, incluidos los de en 1822, Alfredo il Grande en 1823, Gabriella di Vergy en 1826 (rehecho a partir del que había escrito para Michele Carafa en 1816), Il castello di Kenilworth en 1829 e Imelda de' Lambertazzi en 1830.
