Sus padres George Case Setchell; y Mary Ann Davis que provenía de Trowbridge, Inglaterra. En 1887 comienza estudios de botánica en Harvard. Para 1890 defiende su PhD. En 1891 es profesor asistente en Yale. Realizó extensas expediciones a Alaska, Polinesia, Australia, Sudáfrica. (es)
