Los equipos de los Retrievers participan en las competiciones universitarias organizadas por la NCAA, y forman parte de la America East Conference salvo en deportes no esponsorizados por la conferencia, como en natación, que lo hacen en la , y en tenis masculino, que lo hace en la Missouri Valley Conference. En 2018, el equipo de baloncesto se convirtió en el primero de la historia en batir, partiendo como preclasificado 16, al número 1 de la región, Virginia Cavaliers, en la primera ronda del Torneo de la NCAA, haciéndolo además por 20 puntos de ventaja, 74-54. The Retrievers previously competed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) from 1998–99 to 2002–03; and in the Big South Conference from 1992–93 to 1997–98; while they also competed in the Mason–Dixon Conference at the NCAA Division II ranks: the first variation of it from 1972–73 to 1977–78; and the second variation from 1983–84 to 1987–88. On March 16, 2018, the Retrievers men's basketball team defeated the #1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The result marked the first time a 16-seed had ever defeated a 1-seed in the tournament out of 135 previous match-ups. (en)
