Some see the field as a subset of information history. Library history is an academic discipline and should not be confused with its object of study (history of libraries): the discipline is much younger than the libraries it studies. Library history begins in ancient societies through contemporary issues facing libraries today. - A antiga e recente história das bibliotecas é marcada por fatos de pura resistência do conhecimento. Ela vem sofrendo ao longo dos anos a ação do tempo, as guerras, a censura, e mesmo assim elas conseguiram sobreviver a todos os ataques. Na Idade Média, por exemplo, as bibliotecas quase foram extintas, vindo principalmente pela ação de censura da Igreja Católica. Mas, contraditoriamente, foram nos mosteiros, preservadas em esconderijos, e que elas conseguiram mais uma vez se salvar. Um bom exemplo desse tipo de operação medieval foi resgatado no romance "0 nome da Rosa", de autoria de Umberto Eco. Na verdade, as bibliotecas são a metáfora do fênix, que, segundo a tradição egípcia, era uma ave fabulosa que durava muitos séculos e, quando queimada, renascia das próprias cinzas. (pt)
