The community of Halifax, Nova Scotia was created on 1 April 1996, when the City of Dartmouth, the City of Halifax, the Town of Bedford, and the County of Halifax amalgamated and formed the Halifax Regional Municipality. The former City of Halifax was dissolved, and transformed into the Community of Halifax within the municipality. As of 2021, the community has 156,141 inhabitants within an area of 61.961 km2 (23.923 sq mi).

La fondation d'Halifax par les Britanniques entraîna le début de la guerre anglo-micmac. Durant cette dernière, les Micmacs, et les Acadiens firent des raids sur la ville près de 13 fois. Halifax fut établie sur un drumlin qui deviendra plus tard la colline de la Citadelle. L'avant-poste fut nommé en l'honneur de , qui était le Président du Bureau du commerce. Après une lutte entre les résidents et le gouverneur, la Ville d'Halifax fut incorporée en 1842. Depuis la création de la municipalité régionale d'Halifax (MRH) en 1996, ce qui était la Ville d'Halifax est appelée « provinciale non-incorporée » par le site de la MRH. (fr)
