- Gottfried (* um 905; † 1. Juni nach 949) aus der Familie der Matfriede war zumindest 924–936, vermutlich sogar bis 949 Graf im Jülichgau. Er war der Sohn des Grafen Gerhard im Metzgau und der Oda von Sachsen, einer Tochter von Otto dem Erlauchten, Herzog von Sachsen aus der Familie der Liudolfinger, und somit ein Neffe des Königs Heinrich I. Darüber hinaus war er der jüngere Bruder von Wichfrid, der von 924 bis 953 Erzbischof von Köln und ab 941 Erzkanzler ihres Vetters, des Königs Otto I. war. Er heiratete Ermentrud, * 908/909, die wohl älteste Tochter von Karl dem Einfältigen, König von Westfranken, der von 910 bis 923 im Besitz des Herzogtums Lothringen und damit sein Lehnsherr war. Da Karl im Jahr 923 sowohl als König als auch als Herzog abgesetzt wurde und kurze Zeit später in Gefangenschaft geriet (und sein einziger Sohn, der 2-jährige Ludwig. von seiner Mutter nach England in Sicherheit gebracht wurde) ist es wahrscheinlich, dass die Hochzeit kurz vor dem Sturz Karls stattfand, zumal die übrigen fünf Töchter offenbar nicht mehr verheiratet wurden. In einem nicht bekannten Zeitraum war Gottfried als Pfalzgraf von Lothringen der Vertreter des Herzogs. Das Amt wurde von 911 bis 915 von Reginhar (als Markgraf) und anschließend von Wigerich ausgefüllt. Da Wigerich vor 922 starb und Karl III. 923 abgesetzt wurde, bleibt ein kurzes Zeitfenster, in dem Gottfried (trotz seiner Jugend) zum Stellvertreter seines Schwiegervaters in Lothringen eingesetzt worden sein könnte. Da Gottfried aber gleichzeitig der Neffe Heinrichs I., der Vetter Ottos I. und der Bruder von Ottos engem Berater und späteren Kanzler Wichfrid war, ist es auch möglich, dass ihm dieses Amt nach 923 trotz seiner Verbindung zum gestürzten Karl III. anvertraut wurde. Die Tatsache, dass sein Sohn Gottfried von Jülich 959 selbst Herzog von Niederlothringen wurde, und zwar anfangs als Stellvertreter von Erzbischof Brun von Köln, Ottos Bruder und Nachfolger Wichfrids in beiden Ämtern, spricht dafür, dass die verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen nach Sachsen bedeutender waren als die ins Westfrankenreich. - Godfrey, Count Palatine of Lotharingia (c. 905 – 1 June aft. 949) was count of the Jülichgau from at least 924 to 936 and probably even until 949. He was the son of Gerhard I of Metz and Oda of Saxony, a daughter of Otto I, Duke of Saxony from the family of the Liudolfings, and thus a nephew of King Henry the Fowler. Moreover, he was the younger brother of , who was archbishop of Cologne from 924 to 953 and arch-chancellor of his cousin King Otto I from 941. It is thought that his wife Ermentrude (b. 908/9), was the eldest daughter of Charles the Simple, who probably owned the Duchy of Lorraine at the time and was thus his liege lord. Since Charles was deposed in 923, both as king and as duke, and taken prisoner a short time later, it is probable that the wedding took place shortly before the fall of Charles, especially since the other five daughters were apparently no longer married. For a time, Godfrey was known as Count Palatine of Lotharingia. The office was filled from 911 to 915 by Reginar and subsequently by Wigeric. Since Wigeric died before 922, and Charles was deposed 923, there is a short window of time in which Godfrey could have been used as deputy to his father-in-law in Lorraine. But since Godfrey was also the nephew of Henry I, the cousin of Otto I, and the brother of Otto's close adviser and later chancellor Wigfried, it is also possible that this office was entrusted to him after 923 despite his connection to the deposed Charles. The fact that his son Godfrey was himself Duke of Lower Lorraine in 959, and initially was as deputy to Archbishop Bruno of Cologne, Otto's brother and Wigfried's successor in both offices, suggests that his connections with Saxony were more important than those with West Francia.
