Formed in 1991, the band has made multiple national tours in the US, as well as performing in overseas locales like Amsterdam and Jamaica, although they may more commonly be found playing local Columbus, Ohio venues like Newport Music Hall, and Lifestyle Communities Pavilion. They are fixtures in many fine venues across the midwest. The band has shared the stage with many of today's top touring "jam bands", as well as stars such as Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Weir, and Bruce Hornsby. The band's name, pronounced "Acoustic Hookah," was taken from dictionary entries for the two words. The phonetic spellings were chosen, and the schwa (ə) became the band's official symbol. "Schwa" is also the title of a song by keyboardist and primary songwriter Dave Katz. The band endorses a number of charitable causes; among them, Pittsburgh's ongoing BurghSTOCK Concert Series that benefits area non-profits that assist homeless and disabled military veterans. (en)

Dal 1994, con cadenza biennale, la band conduce l'”Hookaville”, un festival musicale della durata di due giorni che si tiene generalmente a Legend Valley a Thornville in Ohio oppure al Frontier Ranch a Kinkersville sempre in Ohio.Questo happening musicale permette agli artisti che vi partecipano massima libertà espressiva ed esecutiva e negli anni ha visto una crescita costante di interesse della critica e del pubblico tanto da essere da molti considerato il miglior festival musicale del Midwest.Sul palco dell'"Hookaville" si sono esibiti artisti come Ratdog, David Crosby, Arlo Guthrie, David Grisman, Dickey Betts, Jazz Mandolin Project, The David Nelson Band, Willie Nelson, The Wailers, P-Funk, Robert Randolph, Little Feat, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, Blues Traveler, Yonder Mountain String Band, e molti altri. La band ha effettuato molti tour nazionali negli Stati Uniti e diversi concerti all'estero come ad Amsterdam nel 2003 ed in Giamaica nel 1999, 2002 e 2006..
