- Ein Zyklothem (griech. κύκλος (kýklos) = Kreis und θέμις (thémis) = Ordnung) ist in der Geologie eine immer wiederkehrende Abfolge von Sedimenten. Der Begriff wurde 1930 von J. M. Weller geprägt. Zunächst vor allem auf Gesteine des Karbons angewendet, wurde der Begriff später allgemein bei vielfach wiederholten Gesteinsabfolgen gebraucht. - In geology, cyclothems are alternating stratigraphic sequences of marine and non-marine sediments, sometimes interbedded with coal seams. Historically, the term was defined by the European coal geologists who worked in coal basins formed during the Carboniferous and earliest Permian periods. The cyclothems consist of repeated sequences, each typically several meters thick, of sandstone resting upon an erosional surface, passing upwards to pelites (finer-grained than sandstone) and topped by coal. Depositional sequences have been thoroughly studied by oil geologists using geophysical profiles of continental and marine basins. A general theory of basin-scale deposition has been formalized under the name of sequence stratigraphy. Some cyclothems might have formed as a result of marine regressions and transgressions related to growth and decay of ice sheets, respectively, as the Carboniferous was a time of widespread glaciation in the southern hemisphere. A more general interpretation of sequences invokes Milankovitch cycles. (en)
- In geologia, i ciclotemi sono sequenze stratigrafiche cicliche di sedimenti marini e marino-marginali o non-marini, talvolta intersecati da strati di carbone. Caratteristici nei periodi del Carbonifero e del Permiano inferiore, questi sedimenti si formarono come risultato dell'alternarsi di fasi trasgressive e regressive del livello marino, in conseguenza di fasi di riduzione e crescita dei ghiacciai continentali. Il Carbonifero e il Permiano inferiore furono in effetti teatro di una estesa glaciazione, conosciuta come glaciazione del Karoo. I ciclotemi si formarono in questo contesto a causa del gradiente topografico estremamente basso delle coste e delle pianure alluvionali e deltizie, che il mare poteva lasciare allo scoperto e ricoprire con escursioni minime. Sedimenti ciclotemici sono caratteristici anche di altri ambienti, come le piane di marea e le piattaforme carbonatiche. Il termine ciclotema utilizzato dai geologi europei interessati alla ricerca dei filoni di carbone formatisi durante il Carbonifero e il Permiano inferiore, era stato originalmente proposto da Harold Wanless nel 1932, all'Università dell'Illinois, per descrivere la successione stratigrafica delle rocce del Pennsylvaniano dell'Illinois. - Een cyclotheem is in de sedimentologie en stratigrafie een cyclische afwisseling van mariene en niet-mariene sedimentlagen, waarin steenkool voorkomt. Cyclothemen worden alleen gevonden in het Carboon (ongeveer 359 tot 299 miljoen jaar oud). Ze zijn waarschijnlijk gevormd door afwisselende perioden van transgressie en regressie als gevolg van het cyclisch aangroeien en weer smelten van ijskappen (in het Carboon vond een ijstijd plaats). Cyclothemen worden in de huidige ijstijd (het Kwartair, vanaf 2,5 miljoen jaar) niet gevormd. Dit komt waarschijnlijk omdat in het Carboon de randen van de continenten bestonden uit laaglanden met zeer kleine topografische verschillen in hoogte, waardoor een kleine stijging van de zeespiegel voor een grote verschuiving van de kustlijn kon zorgen.
