- Carolyn Merchant (* 12. Juli 1936 in Rochester, New York) ist eine US-amerikanische Philosophin und Wissenschaftshistorikerin, die vor allem durch ihre Beiträge zum Ökofeminismus bekannt wurde, besonders durch ihr Buch „Der Tod der Natur. Ökologie, Frauen und neuzeitliche Naturwissenschaft“. Darin beschreibt sie die Aufklärung als Periode, in der die moderne Wissenschaft, insbesondere in Form des Empirismus, erfunden und mit ihr die Natur atomisiert und objektiviert wurde. Ihre Forschung und publizistische Arbeit war zentral für die Entstehung der Umweltgeschichte und für die Wissenschaftsgeschichte. - Carolyn Merchant (born July 12, 1936 in Rochester, New York) is an American ecofeminist philosopher and historian of science most famous for her theory (and book of the same title) on The Death of Nature, whereby she identifies the Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century as the period when science began to atomize, objectify, and dissect nature, foretelling its eventual conception as composed of inert atomic particles. Her works are important in the development of environmental history and the history of science. She is Professor emerita of Environmental History, Philosophy, and Ethics at UC Berkeley. (en)

Elle est connue pour sa théorie (développée dans son livre éponyme) sur « la mort de la nature » (The Death of Nature), dans laquelle elle identifie le siècle des Lumières comme la période où la science a commencé à atomiser, objectifier et disséquer la nature, nourrissant la conception d'une nature inerte, conception qui deviendra ensuite dominante. Ses travaux ont joué un rôle important dans le développement de l'histoire de l'environnement et de l'histoire des sciences.
