Diplômé de l'École polytechnique et de l'École des mines de Paris, il rejoint McKinsey & Company en qualité de consultant en management de 1986 à 1994. De 1994 à 1999, il retourne en Côte d'Ivoire comme directeur général du Bureau national d'études techniques et de développement (BNETD), rattaché directement au Premier ministre et au président. À partir de 1998, il est à la fois président du BNETD et ministre du Plan et du Développement. Après le coup d'État de 1999 en Côte d'Ivoire, il retourne dans le secteur privé, d'abord chez McKinsey à Paris de 2000 à 2002, avant d'intégrer l'équipe dirigeante d'Aviva et enfin, de rejoindre Prudential. De septembre 2009 à juin 2015, il dirige le groupe d'assurances Prudential, ce qui fait de lui le premier dirigeant noir d’une entreprise du FTSE 100. Tidjane Thiam est également membre de l', une fondation basée à Genève. Il a occupé le poste de directeur général du Crédit suisse quatre années durant lesquelles il ramène la banque à une situation de profitabilité. Après son passage dans le monde des affaires, dont il dénonce le plafond de verre, notamment en France, il est nommé administrateur auprès du groupe Kering et fut pressenti pour devenir ministre de l'Économie et des Finances en France. He was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Swiss bank Credit Suisse from March 2015 to February 2020. He was the chief financial officer of British banking group Prudential from 2007 to 2009, and then its CEO until 2015. In 2019, Thiam became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Born into a prominent political family in the Ivory Coast, he holds dual Ivorian and French citizenship. He studied advanced mathematics and physics in France before joining the management consultants McKinsey & Company in 1986, where he worked until 1994. From 1994 to 1999 he worked in the Ivory Coast first as chief executive of the National Bureau for Technical Studies (BNETD). Following the 1999 Ivorian coup d'état, he resumed a private sector career and rejoined McKinsey in Paris from 2000 to 2002, then worked as a senior executive for Aviva before being recruited by Prudential. In 2020, Thiam was appointed by the shareholders of the Kering Foundation to become part of the board of directors, as well as to take the position as Chair of the Audit Committee. (en)
