Historic Toronto fire stations are primarily in the downtown core and with the former Toronto Fire Department. Fire stations built from the late 19th century and up to 1950s varied in style. Fire halls built from the 1950s to 1980s tended to be utilitarian in design and found in the suburbs (North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke). The latest fire stations are modern, but they often lack the character of older fire stations in the city. Most fire halls built after the 1940s are demolished when they are retired and rarely re-used.
