Jako velitel vlasteneckých sil v bitvě u Bunker Hillu vešel ve známost svým rozkazem vojákům: „Nestřílejte, dokud neuvidíte bělma jejich očí“, takže povstalečtí vojáci stříleli na nepřítele na kratší vzdálenost, a tedy mnohem účinněji. Šetřili tím současně omezené zásoby munice, které měli k dispozici. Historici diskutují o tom, zda toto památné rčení pronesl poprvé opravdu Prescott, nebo již někdo před ním. (cs)

- William Prescott (February 20, 1726 – October 13, 1795) was an American colonel in the Revolutionary War who commanded the patriot forces in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Prescott is known for his order to his soldiers, "Do not fire until you see the whites of their eyes", such that the rebel troops may shoot at the enemy at shorter ranges, and therefore more accurately and lethally, and so conserve their limited stocks of ammunition. It is debated whether Prescott or someone earlier coined this memorable saying. (en)

Er wurde als Sohn von Richter Benjamin Prescott (1696–1738) und Abigail Oliver Prescott (1697–1765) geboren. Am 13. April 1758 heiratete er Abigail Hale (1733–1821), mit der er 1762 einen Sohn namens William Prescott bekam. Sein Enkel William H. Prescott war ein bekannter Historiker und Autor. (de)
