- Les Glénans is a French sailing school, operating as a non-profit organization. Most of its instructors are volunteers. It was founded in 1947 by Philippe and Hélène Viannay, who had been involved with the French Resistance during World War II. Its first site was the Glénan archipelago, about 10 nautical miles (20 km) off the coast of southern Brittany. Among its first boats was a 12-meter Bermudian cutter called Sereine, which is now a French listed monument and still sails after having been entirely refurbished in 2005. (en)

| - Les Glénans ist eine berühmte französische Segelschule, die 1947 von Hélène und gegründet wurde; zunächst für junge Leute, die wie sie selbst während des Krieges in der Résistance waren. Heute hat sie die Form eines gemeinnützigen Vereins (französisch: association loi 1901, d'utilité publique). Die Hauptverwaltung ist in Paris. Der Name der Schule weist auf den ältesten Standort hin, die bretonischen Glénan-Inseln (die Aussprache von „Glénan“ und „Glénans“ ist auf Französisch identisch). Mittlerweile führt die Schule Segelkurse auch an fünf weiteren Stützpunkten in Frankreich durch, zeitweilig kam dazu ein weiterer in Irland (1985 bis 2011 selbständig als Glenans Irish Sailing Club). Außerdem werden Segeltörns angeboten, die entweder von den Stützpunkten aus oder außerhalb Frankreichs (z. B. in Italien oder den Antillen) stattfinden. Kurse werden grundsätzlich auf Französisch durchgeführt; in Irland wurden sie zeitweilig auf Englisch und Französisch durchgeführt, einzelne Kurse in Italien auch auf Italienisch (i. d. R. zweisprachig mit Französisch) angeboten. Reine Theoriekurse richtet die Schule in Paris sowie als Fernkurse aus; da Segelscheine in Frankreich keine so große Rolle spielen, orientiert sich die Schule schwerpunktmäßig – in Theorie und Praxis – an der Segelpraxis, nicht am Scheinerwerb. Das seit 1961 von Les Glénans herausgegebene und in neuen Auflagen immer wieder stark überarbeitete Segelhandbuch ist in Frankreich ein Standardwerk. (de)

C'est en 2019 la plus importante école de voile d'Europe : chaque année, environ 14 000 stagiaires et 860 moniteurs (dont 800 bénévoles) participent à plus de 110 000 journées de voile, sous la supervision de 70 salariés permanents (renforcés par 30 salariés supplémentaires en saison). Depuis sa création, l'école a formé plus de 450 000 stagiaires. Elle offre des stages dans tous les domaines de la voile : le dériveur, le catamaran, la planche à voile, le kitesurf et surtout la croisière, côtière et hauturière, qui constitue 70 % de l'activité. Its headquarters are in Paris, France, and it operates five sites in France: Paimpol, l'Ile-d'Arz and l'Archipel (as the Glénan archipelago is referred to by Glénans adepts) in Brittany, Marseillan in Southern France and Bonifacio in Corsica. Sailing takes place in most of the western Mediterranean basin, the UK, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. Cruises cross the Atlantic Ocean and, in the past, have visited Iceland. Les Glénans teaches catamaran sailing, dinghy sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing, but 70% of its activity is yachting. Every year up to 14,000 students and 800 instructors sail for 100,000 days. The school also issues a book on sailing techniques. Initially, the idea of gathering knowledge on sailing and basic ship maintenance was for internal purpose as the founders were not seasoned sails men. They gathered information by being taught by local fishermen and sailors, organized the knowledge and improved it with experience and feedback from their members. Year after year, this book (called in French "Cours de navigation des Glénans") grew, and is now considered as a "must have" by sailing enthusiasts. The fleet of Les Glénans consists of a wide variety of boats which are usually adapted specially for the purposes of the school. On the water, these boats are usually recognizable by a red stripe across the mainsail.
