Zakynthos (Greek: Ζάκυνθος, romanized: Zákynthos [ˈzacinθos]) or Zante (Greek: Τζάντε, romanized: Tzánte), is a city and a former municipality on the island of Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Zakynthos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is the capital of the island of Zakynthos. Apart from the official name Zakynthos, it is also called Chora (i.e. the Town), a common denomination in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town. The municipal unit of Zákynthos lies in the easternmost part of the island and has a land area of 45.79 square kilometres (17.68 square miles) and a population of 16,810 at the 2011 census. It is subdivided into the communities Zakynthos (pop. 9,773), Ampelokipoi (1,930), Argasi (1,266), Vasilikos (799), Gaitani (1,899) and Bochali (1,143). The municipal unit also includes the Strofades islands, which lie about 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of Zákynthos island. 자킨토스(그리스어: Ζάκυνθος)는 그리스 자킨토스섬에 위치한 도시로, 이오니아 제도주에 속하는 현인 자킨토스 현의 현청 소재지이며 면적은 45.788km2, 높이는 0 ~ 10m, 인구는 16,475명(2001년 기준), 인구 밀도는 360명/km2이다. De stad Zakynthos (Grieks: Ζάκυνθος) is de grootste stad en tevens hoofdplaats van het gelijknamige eiland in de Ionische Zee.Zakynthos-stad heeft circa 13.000 inwoners (peildatum 2006). De plaats werd bij een grote aardbeving in 1953 voor bijna 90% verwoest. De herbouw vond plaats naar oude bouwplannen, waardoor de stad grotendeels haar oude gezicht kon behouden. Zakynthos is zodoende een mengeling van oude, gereconstrueerde en aangepaste nieuwbouw geworden. De haven van Zakynthos is een plek die veel vissersschepen als thuishaven hebben en er wordt van hier uit ook een regelmatige veerdienst met de rest van Griekenland onderhouden. Die Kernstadt mit rund 9.800 Einwohnern bildete bis 2010 das Zentrum einer Stadtgemeinde, die 2010 auf die neue Gemeinde Zakynthos erweitert wurde, die die gesamte Insel mitsamt den Strofades, also das Gebiet der bis 2010 existierenden Präfektur Zakynthos umfasst. Die Gemeinde, die bis dahin bestanden hat, ist seitdem ein Gemeindebezirk (dimotiki enotita), in dem die Kernstadt als Stadtbezirk oder ‚städtische Gemeinschaft‘ (dimotiki kinotita) geführt wird.
