D'aquesta manera es poden aconseguir resultats acceptables en un temps més curt. És en aquest sentit que els mètodes heurístics es poden considerar dreceres simplificadores. Nella sostanza si riteneva che una teoria scientifica dovesse essere in grado di produrre ipotesi che potessero poi essere confermate o respinte dagli esperimenti. È facile vedere come questa concezione tendesse a fornire un criterio che giustificasse a posteriori le nuove scoperte, ma che non indicava strade concrete né operative per conseguirle.
