Aquellos cojinetes que disponen de un sistema de rodillos internos, se denominan más específicamente rodamientos.​ De forma más general, un cojinete se define como un elemento mecánico que restringe el movimiento relativo entre dos partes de un mecanismo, permitiendo solo el movimiento deseado y reduciendo la fricción entre ambos. Su diseño puede permitir tanto un movimiento rotativo como lineal de la parte libre; y permite controlarlo limitando el desplazamiento inducido gracias a las fuerzas normales que operan en las zonas de apoyo entre las partes móviles.
