The 2011–12 South Carolina Stingrays season was the 19th season for the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL. Cail MacLean did not return for a third season as South Carolina's head coach, having accepted an assistant coaching position with the AHL's Abbotsford Heat. Former assistant coach Spencer Carbery took the reins in his first season as the team's head coach and director of hockey operations. Rob Concannon returned for his second season as the Stingrays' president. Former Ohio State University ice hockey assistant coach J.B. Bittner joined the organization as assistant coach. Team captain Matt Scherer rejoined the Stingrays for his fifth consecutive season and his third as captain. Also re-signing with the Stingrays for his fifth season was forward Trent Campbell. Veteran enforcer and fan favorite Nate Kiser was not offered a contract for the season and announced his retirement from professional hockey. The Stingrays inducted him into the team's hall of fame on the opening night of the season. The season opened on October 14, 2011, with a 4–3 overtime victory at home against the Reading Royals. The Stingrays met their in-state rivals—the Greenville Road Warriors—in two pre-season contests, on October 7 and 8, falling to the Road Warriors in a shootout in Greenville and in regulation play in North Charleston. The Stingrays finished the season with a record of 37–28–4–3, earning 81 points and ending up fourth in the South Division and seventh in the Eastern Conference. They maintained their league record for most playoff appearances, advancing to the Kelly Cup playoffs for the 18th time.
