The origin is often confused with the Portuguese words "Penha" which means "rocky mountain" and "longa" meaning long. While the old Penhalonga mine closed in 1943, a new mine, the Rezende Mine, opened in 1999. Bauxite clay, which is also mined in the area, supplies most of Zimbabwe's pottery industry. Durch die portugiesische Companhia de Moçambique (Mozambique Company) und deren Vertreter J. H. Jeffreys und Baron de Rezende wurden 1888 antike Goldabbaustätten entdeckt, die nach Rezende und Count Penhalonga, dem damaligen Vorsitzenden der Companhia de Moçambique, benannt wurden. Diese wurden in der Folge neu erschlossen. Um die 1897 gegründete Phenalonga-Mine entwickelte sich die Stadt. Heute sind die Minen der Stadt, unter anderem die Redwing Mine, bedeutsam für den Goldabbau in Simbabwe, auch Silber und Schmucksteine werden gefördert.
