Front-end loading (FEL), also referred to as pre-project planning (PPP), front-end engineering design (FEED), feasibility analysis, conceptual planning, programming/schematic design and early project planning, is the process for conceptual development of projects in processing industries such as upstream oil and gas, petrochemical, natural gas refining, extractive metallurgy, waste-to-energy, and pharmaceuticals. This involves developing sufficient strategic information with which owners can address risk and make decisions to commit resources in order to maximize the potential for success. Front-end engineering design houdt in dat er in een vroeg stadium van een project (lees: de voorzijde/front end van een project) al een - weinig verfijnd - planning en ontwerp gemaakt wordt, daar waar er nog relatief veel veranderd kan worden in het ontwerp zonder dat daaraan direct grote kosten verbonden zijn. Dergelijke aanpak is typisch voor industrie met kapitaalintensieve projecten met een lange lifecycle (doorlooptijd, ), denk daarbij aan investeringen van miljarden of honderd miljoenen gedurende een aantal jaren voordat er maar sprake is van enige winst. Ondanks dat de aanpak relatief gezien duurder is en er meer tijd mee gemoeid is, staan deze meerkosten in geen verhouding tot de kosten die gemaakt moeten worden bij significante veranderingen in het ontwerp in een laat stadium van betreffende project.
