- Öræfi, Öræfasveit früher Litlahérað ist eine Landschaft im Südosten von Island. Es ist das westlichste Gebiet in Austur-Skaftafellssýsla, zwischen dem Breiðamerkursandur und der Skeiðará, östlich von Kirkjubæjarklaustur und südlich des Öræfajökulls. Im Mittelalter wurde das Gebiet Hérað oder Litlahérað genannt, aber es wurde nach dem großen Ausbruch des Öræfajökull 1362 und den folgenden Überflutungen verlassen und wurde danach nur noch Öræfi genannt. Dieses isländische Wort für Einöde oder Wüste kommt auch in anderen Gegenden Islands als Landschaftsbezeichnung vor. Das Gebiet war lange Zeit sehr isoliert durch zwei große Gewässer, die Reisen sowohl nach Osten als auch nach Westen behinderten. Das hielt an bis 1967 die Jökulsá á Breiðamerkursandi überbrückt wurde und 1974 die Skeiðarárbrú eröffnet wurde und damit auch die Ringstraße. In Öræfi liegt der Skaftafell-Nationalpark, der 1967 gegründet wurde. Erst 1973 wurde das Gebiet an die allgemeine Stromversorgung angeschlossen. (de)
- Öræfasveit (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈœːrˌaiːvaˌsveiːt]) or Öræfi [ˈœːrˌaiːvɪ] (previously called Litlahérað [ˈlɪhtlaˌçɛːraθ], "little district") is a western region in Austur-Skaftafellssýsla, Iceland. It lies between Breiðamerkursandur and the river Skeiðará, east of the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and South, West and East of the Öræfajökull volcano. It has been a part of the municipality of Hornafjörður since 1998. In the Middle Ages, this region was called Hérað or Litlahérað, but was deserted in the wake of the 1362 eruption of Öræfajökull and the subsequent flooding of the region. After these events the region was simply called Öræfi ("wilderness/desolation"). Historically, the region was very isolated since two large rivers hindered access from both from the east and west. This isolation continued until the Jökulsá á Breiðamerkursandi river was traversed by the Route 1 Ring Road and the Skeiðará bridge in 1974. Skaftafell National Park was established in Öræfasveit in 1967. It merged into the much larger Vatnajökull National Park in 2008. (en)
