The trio travel from town to town in this world, fighting other criminals for possession of the Rings of the Dead. They obtain three of said rings in the course of the story, but due to the series' cancellation, the plot is left incomplete. Critical reception of Zombie Powder has been largely mediocre. Reviewers of the series have criticized it for being excessively derivative, having an underdeveloped setting, and containing few compelling characters. Its graphical presentation and combat sequences have, however, been generally complimented, along with its blending of humor and action. Despite this, Zombie Powder has achieved moderate commercial success in the United States due to its heavy action focus and the popularity of Tite Kubo's second manga series Bleach. (en)

La razón de dicha cancelación, aparte de que disfrutó de poco interés por parte del público, se debe también al precario estado anímico y mental del mismo Tite a la hora de escribirlo y el mismo se ha disculpado en múltiples ocasiones, pues dice que pudo haber hecho un mucho mejor trabajo con el material que tenía. Situado en un universo que nos recuerda levemente al western, aunque no tan fuertemente como Trigun o Cowboy Bebop, Zombie Powder nos narra la historia de Gamma Akutabi, un muy buscado criminal de la llamada clase "zero-s" o "zero-special", Gamma viaja sin rumbo fijo en busca de los doce anillos de los muertos, artefactos raros y místicos que se alimentan de la vida de sus presas y que todos juntos son capacez de crear el polvo de zombie: Una medicina que amplifica el poder de vida y es capaz de dar inmortalidad a los vivos y vida nueva a los muertos. Con un pasado oscuro y tormentoso que tal vez nunca tendremos la oportunidad de conocer, así como una personalidad que va desde lo irreverente y risible hasta lo noble, hasta lo simplemente violento y animal, su brazo derecho se encuentra recubierto de blinadje negro, el cual protege su palma a la hora de atajar balas con ellas, razón por lo que es conocido como "la muerte de brazo negro" y usa una enorme espada-sierra motorizada y su conocimiento de la técnica "horin-zanjutsu" para erradicar a sus enemigos. En sus viajes es acompañado por Elwood, un joven ladrón y carterista experto en lanzar cuchillos que desea el polvo para revivir a su hermana, Smith, su socio y un ser aun más misterioso aunque no tan oscuro como el mismo Gamma, y Wolfganina Lalla Getto, alias "Wolfina", la reportera de la justicia y la verdad, que junto a su trípode y su cámara lleva a aquellos que abusan de los débiles ante la justica, y cuyo hermano menor, Emilio, tiene uno de los anillos alojado en su cerebro, alimentándose de él y dejándolo en un eterno estado de coma. La historia es interesante y la única razón por la que no es profunda es porque no se le permite profundizar. Tiene personajes interesantes y originales, villanos simplemente dementes y muchas de esas famosas referencias musicales que Tite suele meter en sus mangas . Gráficamente, los fans de Bleach reconocerán el estilo original del que Tite hacía gala en los primeros volúmenes de su última obra: Un tanto descuidado y tosco, sin embargo interesante y atrayente.
