- Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), often referred to as just Arthur, is the seventh studio album by the English rock band the Kinks, released in October 1969. Kinks frontman Ray Davies constructed the concept album as the soundtrack to a Granada Television play and developed the storyline with novelist Julian Mitchell; the television programme was never produced. The rough plot revolved around Arthur Morgan, a carpet-layer, who was based on Ray and guitarist Dave Davies' brother-in-law Arthur Anning. A stereo version was released internationally. A mono version was released in the UK, but not in the US. The album was met with poor sales but nearly unanimous acclaim, especially among the American music press. Although Arthur and its first two singles, "Drivin’" and "Shangri-La", failed to chart in the UK, the Kinks returned to the Billboard charts after a two-year absence with "Victoria", the lead single in the US, peaking at number 62. The album itself reached number 105 on the Billboard album chart, their highest position since 1965. Arthur paved the way for the further success of the Kinks’ 1970 comeback album Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One. (en)

Außerdem hatte im April 1969 Bassist Pete Quaife die Band verlassen, ein Nachfolger (John Dalton) musste gefunden werden. Ray Davies legte das Konzeptalbum als Soundtrack für ein geplantes Fernsehspiel an, welches allerdings aus Geldmangel nie realisiert wurde. Möglicherweise war der auftraggebenden TV-Produktionsfirma Granada das Spießer-Psychogramm aber auch zu pessimistisch und zu renitent. Erzählt wird vom Aufstieg des Teppichlegers Arthur nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Sowohl sarkastisch als auch melancholisch beschreiben die Lieder das frühere England, das Arthur einst kannte, die Verheißung des Lebens in Australien, die Leere des komfortablen aber oberflächlichen Lebens in seiner Heimat, dem vermeintlichen Shangri-La, von der Entschlossenheit der britischen Bevölkerung während des Zweiten Weltkrieges sowie vom Tod des Bruders im Ersten Weltkrieg. Viele der Lieder sind wieder im harten Rock-’n’-Roll-Stil der Anfangsjahre gehalten, den die Band zuletzt vernachlässigt hatte, wie beispielsweise Victoria oder Brainwashed. Von den ausgekoppelten Singles Drivin’, Shangri-La und Victoria war nur letztere ein bescheidener Hit in Großbritannien (Platz 33). Das Album wurde wieder insbesondere von der amerikanischen Kritik sehr positiv aufgenommen, speziell im Vergleich mit Tommy, der allerdings höchst erfolgreichen Rockoper der britischen Band The Who, welche im Mai des gleichen Jahres veröffentlicht worden war. Arthur hingegen war nur ein mäßiger kommerzieller Erfolg, wurde aber allgemein als Beendigung der Krise der Kinks nach den Enttäuschungen des Jahres 1968 betrachtet. Ebenso möglich wurde eine Rückkehr auf amerikanische Live-Bühnen Ende 1969 nach der Aufhebung des fünfjährigen Bannes, 1964 ausgelöst durch einen Streit mit der US-amerikanischen Musikergewerkschaft. Le projet de téléfilm est rapidement abandonné et seul l'album voit le jour. Il est enregistré par les Kinks en l'espace de deux mois, entre mai et juillet 1969, aux studios Pye de Londres. C'est le premier album du groupe avec le bassiste John Dalton, qui remplace le membre fondateur Pete Quaife. À sa sortie, l'album est unanimement salué par la critique, en particulier la presse rock américaine. Det här albumet skrevs ursprungligen till en TV-film till Granada Television. Men producenten fick inte ihop budgeten och filmen gjordes aldrig. Handlingen utvecklade Ray Davies tillsammans med pjäsförfattaren Julian Mitchell, som sedan skrev skivans "liner notes". Innan inspelningarna av albumet påbörjades slutade gruppens basist Pete Quaife, och albumet blev det första med basisten John Dalton som kom att stanna hos gruppen under 1970-talet. Albumet handlar om en man som heter Arthur Morgan och är mattlägare. Men livet är tufft i Storbritannien efter kriget. Man får följa honom och hans familj när de lämnar Storbritannien för ett liv i Australien. Först får man ta del av Arthurs tankar om ett svunnet England, och sedan vad de stöter på i Australien. Albumet innebar att The Kinks åter syntes på Billboard-listan i USA, där deras föregående album The Village Green Preservation Society inte alls noterats. Men försäljningen var ändå relativt blygsam och skivan listnoterades inte i Storbritannien. Samtidens musikjournalister bemötte skivan mycket positivt, Robert Christgau gav skivan A- i betyg, och Greil Marcus som skrev för Rolling Stone gav en positiv recension och utnämnde albumet till 1969 års bästa brittiska album. Skivan anses än idag hålla hög klass vilket bland annat Stephen Thomas Erlewines femstjärniga recension på webbsidan allmusic är ett exempel på. Den sarkastiska "Victoria" blev den största hiten från albumet. Den listnoterades både på amerikanska och brittiska singellistan, och i USA blev den gruppens största singelframgång sedan "Sunny Afternoon" 1966. Den andra singeln från albumet, "" gick dock obemärkt förbi, utom i Nederländerna där den blev en mindre singelhit. Skivomslaget designades av Bob Lawrie. Originalutgåvorna gavs ut med ett utviksfodral där man drog upp LP-skivorna ur en kängurupung. Skivan innehöll även ett innerfodral med en bild på Drottning Victoria hållande huset "Shangri-La" med albumets huvudperson Arthur i. Senare cd-utgåvor av albumet innehåller även singeln "Plastic Man" och dess b-sida "King Kong" som ursprungligen inte gavs ut på album. (sv)
