The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a pair of United Nations-sponsored conferences about information, communication and, in broad terms, the information society that took place in 2003 in Geneva and in 2005 in Tunis. One of its chief aims was to bridge the so-called global digital divide separating rich countries from poor countries by spreading access to the Internet in the developing world. The conferences established 17 May as World Information Society Day.

Il vise à réduire l'inégalité des habitants de la planète vis-à-vis de l'accès à l'information par le biais des nouvelles technologies de communication et en particulier à l'Internet. Il a adopté une Déclaration de principes et un Plan d'action.La première phase a eu lieu à Genève, Suisse, du 10 au 12 décembre 2003. Son deuxième volet s'est tenu à Tunis du 16 au 18 novembre 2005. De top vond twee keer plaats, het eerste deel in december 2003 in Genève, het tweede deel in 2005 in Tunis. Het doel van de top is de digitale kloof te verkleinen. In Genève waren representanten uit 175 landen aanwezig. Er waren ook 60 staatshoofden, waarvan slechts een klein gedeelte afkomstig uit de rijke landen. (nl)

  • World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) oli YK:n alainen tietoyhteiskuntaa käsittelevä huippukokous. WSIS:n ensimmäinen vaihe järjestettiin Genevessä 10.-12. joulukuuta 2003 ja toinen osa Tunisissa 16.-18. marraskuuta 2005. Kokousten tarkoituksena oli löytää ratkaisuja tieto- ja viestintäteknologian tuomiin ongelmiin ja löytää tapoja käyttää niitä kehitysmaiden taloudellisen ja sosiaalisen kehityksen edistämiseksi ja digitaalisen kuilun poistamiseksi. Huippukokous teki päätöksiä korkeimmalla poliittisella tasolla, joten siihen osallistuivat YK:n jäsenmaiden valtion ja hallitusten päämiehet. Kokoukseen voivat kuitenkin osallistua seuraajajäseninä myös yksityiset kansalaiset, kansalaisjärjestöt, liike-elämän järjestöt ja työmarkkinajärjestöt. Huippukokouksen ensimmäisen vaiheen tuloksena julkaistiin kokouksen periaatejulistus ja toimenpideohjelma. Kokouksen toisessa vaiheessa keskityttiin huippukokouksen päätösten toimeenpanoon ja seurantaan ja pyrittiin ratkaisemaan avoimeksi jääneet kysymykset internetin hallinnosta ja rahoitusmekanismeista. Kansalaisjärjestöt kritisoivat WSIS-prosessia siitä, että monet YK:n jäsenmaista eivät ole valmiita aidosti sitoutumaan prosessin tavoitteisiin kuten köyhyyden vähentämiseen ja digitaalisten kuilujen poistamiseen. World Summit on the Information Society) ist ein von den Vereinten Nationen gesponserter Weltgipfel zu den Themen Information und Kommunikation. Er wurde nach einem Beschluss der Vereinten Nationen von der Internationalen Fernmeldeunion durchgeführt und bestand aus zwei Teilen. Der erste Teil fand vom 10.-12. Dezember 2003 in Genf statt und hatte etwa 12. 000 Besucher. Zum zweiten, vom 16. bis 18. November 2005 in Tunis (Tunesien) stattgefundenen Teil, kamen etwa 17. 000 Delegierte aus 175 Ländern. (de)
