- El windowbox (també anomenat "gutterboxing", o "matchboxing") és un fenomen o procés que té lloc a la pantalla de cinema o de vídeo i es produeix quan es transfereixen a pantalles panoràmiques o amples pel·lícules que no han estat rodades per a ser transmeses en aquestes, i és necessari aplicar letterboxing i pillarboxing simultàniament. És a dir, aquest terme és l'equivalent en les quatre direccions del letterbox i el pillarbox, la transmissió d'una pel·lícula a un altre format utilitzant barres negres a les parts laterals i també a les inferiors i superiors, per tal de no perdre la relació d'aspecte de la imatge original. Dabei wird das Filmbild von allen Seiten von einem dicken, meist schwarzen Balken umgeben. Da eine Windowbox viel Bildfläche "verschwendet" und bei digitalen Signalen zusätzlich eine Verringerung der Videoauflösung durch Skalierung mit sich bringt, wird seitens der Filmemacher und Gerätehersteller versucht, das Auftreten dieses Phänomens möglichst zu verhindern. - El windowbox (también llamado "gutterboxing", o "matchboxing") es un hecho o proceso que tiene lugar en la pantalla de cine o de vídeo y se produce cuando se transfieren a pantallas panorámicas o anchas películas que no han sido rodadas para ser transmitidas en estas, y es necesario aplicar letterboxing y pillarboxing simultáneamente. Es decir, este término es el equivalente en las cuatro direcciones del letterbox y el pillarbox, la transmisión de una película a otro formato utilizando barras negras (mattes) a las partes laterales y también a las inferiores y superiores, para no perder la relación de aspecto de la imagen original. - Windowboxing (also called either the "postage stamp effect", "gutterboxing", "matchboxing", or "double letterboxing") in the display of film or video occurs when the aspect ratio of the media is such that the letterbox effect and pillarbox effect occur simultaneously. Sometimes, by accident or design, a standard ratio image is presented in the central portion of a letterbox picture (or vice versa), resulting in a black border all around. It is generally disliked because it wastes much screen space and reduces the resolution of the original image. It can occur when a 16:9 film is set to 4:3 (letterbox), but then shown on a 16:9 TV or other output device. It can also occur in the opposite direction (4:3 to 16:9 to 4:3). Few films have been released with this aspect ratio—one example is The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, which had numerous scenes with Steve & Terri Irwin using widescreen pillar boxing. (en)

Efekt windowbox powstaje gdy letterbox i pillarbox występuje jednocześnie, np. gdy obraz 16:9 rozszerzony o czarne pasy do formatu letterbox wyświetlany jest na ekranie 16:9. Rezultatem jest wyśrodkowany, pomniejszony kadr otoczony czarną ramką. Zaletą wykorzystania techniki windowbox jest zachowanie właściwych proporcji obrazu źródłowego, bez rozciągania czy ucinania fragmentów kadru.
