- William Keeling (* 1578; † 1620) war ein britischer Schiffskapitän im Dienst der Britischen Ostindien-Kompanie. Keeling wird die Entdeckung der Kokosinseln zugeschrieben. Auf dem Rückweg von Java nach England soll er das Atoll im Jahre 1609 entdeckt haben. Allerdings konnte dies bis heute noch nicht endgültig bewiesen werden. Nach ihm benannt wurden die Keeling Islands (North Keeling und South Keeling) im Indischen Ozean, der Pulu-Keeling-Nationalpark, sowie eine Vogelart, die nur auf North Keeling lebende Keeling-Bindenralle (Rallus philippensis andrewsi). En el segundo viaje como comandante del Susan y en el tercero, 1607, como comandante del Red Dragon y jefe de la expedición; al regreso a Inglaterra, 1609, como comandante del Hector descubrió las islas Cocos. Posteriormente, en la época de las acciones conjuntas,1615, figura como comandante del Red Dragon en camino a Bantam, Java, para tomar el puesto de agente de la Compañía y jefe de todas las factorías en el lejano oriente. En 1617 regresó enfermo a Inglaterra. En 1618 el rey Jacobo I lo nombró valet de su cámara y comandante del castillo de Cowes en la isla de Wight. Murió en 1620. (es)

- Captain William Keeling (1577 – 19 September 1619), of the East India Company, was a British sea captain. He commanded the Susanna on the second East India Company voyage in 1604. During this voyage his crew was reduced to fourteen men and one of the ships vanished. On the third voyage he commanded the Red Dragon and the Hector in 1607. During this voyage he met with an ambassador from the Siamese Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1608 at Bantam at the west end of Java. He discovered the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in 1609 as he was going home from Banda to England. On his return, King James I appointed Keeling a Groom of the Chamber, and in c. 1618 he was named Captain of Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight, where he died in 1620. A fragment of Keeling's diary survives, in which he allegedly details his crew's shipboard performances of Shakespeare's Hamlet (off the coast of Sierra Leone, 5 September 1607, and at Socotra, 31 March 1608) and of Richard II (Sierra Leone, 30 September 1607). For a time after its discovery, the fragment was suspected of being a forgery, but it subsequently became generally accepted as genuine, though recent scholarship has reverted to the view that it is almost certainly a forgery by John Payne Collier. Podczas powrotu z Jawy do rodzinnej Anglii w 1609 roku odkrył Wyspy Kokosowe, które początkowo nazwano Keeling Islands. Pozostały one jednak przez długi czas niezamieszkane. W ojczyźnie został dowódcą zamku w Cowes na wyspie Wight, gdzie zmarł w 1620 roku. We fragmentach swego dziennika, które przetrwały pisze, że jego załoga wystawiała sztuki Szekspira Hamlet oraz Ryszard II. Sama dzienna data odkrycia wysp nie została jednak zanotowana. (pl)
