The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL).

Dalšími soutěžemi jsou Ontario Hockey League a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. V těchto soutěžích působí největší talenty zámořského hokeje, v posledních letech mají se tendenci do nich přesouvat i mladí Evropané. V soutěži smí hrát hráči od 16 let (v případě velkého talentu se udělují výjimky). Hokejista v lize působnost ukončí v sezoně, na jejímž konci je mu 21 let. V lize hraje 17 kanadských a 5 amerických mužstev. Vítěz soutěže vyhrává trofej Ed Chynoweth Cup a získává právo bojovat s vítězi OHL a QMJHL o Memorial Cup v národním juniorském šampionátu. Liga byla založena v roce 1966 a nejúspěšnějším klubem je Kamloops Blazers, který získal šest titulů. V letech 1966-68 se soutěž jmenovala Western Canada Junior Hockey League a v letech 1968–1978 Western Canada Hockey League.
