Il s'agit de la sixième édition de ce tournoi féminin depuis son apparition au sein du programme olympique lors des Jeux de 2000 ayant eu lieu à Sydney en Australie. Le tournoi masculin est, quant à lui, présent depuis les Jeux olympiques de 1900. Les fédérations affiliées à la FINA participent par le biais de leur équipe masculine aux épreuves de qualification. Neuf équipes rejoignent ainsi le Japon, nation hôte de la compétition, pour s'affronter lors du tournoi final. (fr)
- The women's tournament of water polo at the 2020 Summer Olympics at Tokyo, Japan was played from 24 July to 7 August 2021 at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center. It was the sixth appearance of the women's tournament, which had been held consecutively since 2000. On 24 March 2020, the Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the pandemic, the games were played behind closed doors. The United States won their third consecutive and overall gold medal after a finals win over Spain, while Hungary captured the bronze medal, beating defending bronze medalists Russia. The medals for the competition were presented by Samira Asghari, Afghanistan; IOC Member, and the medalists' bouquets were presented by , United States; FINA Treasurer. (en)

- Het waterpolotoernooi voor vrouwen tijdens de Olympische Zomerspelen 2020 in Tokio begon op 24 juli 2021 en eindigde op 7 augustus. Dit was de zesde editie van het vrouwentoernooi, dat sinds 2000 wordt georganiseerd. De tien deelnemende teams waren verdeeld over twee groepen van vijf, waarin een halve competitie werd gespeeld. Areną zawodów było . Pierwotnie zawody miały odbyć się rok wcześniej jednak zostały przełożone wskutek pandemii COVID-19. W późniejszym czasie ustalono, że zmagania olimpijskie odbędą się bez kibiców zza granicy. Mistrzyniami olimpijskimi zostały reprezentantki Stanów Zjednoczonych, które w finale pokonały Hiszpanki, trzecie miejsce przypadło w udziale Węgierkom. (pl)
