The W86 design was canceled in September 1980 when the Pershing II missile mission shifted from destroying hardened targets to targeting soft targets at greater range. The W85 warhead, which had been developed in parallel with the W86, was used for all production Pershing II missiles. Development work for the W86's penetrator case began in 1975 at Sandia National Laboratories. The weapon was intended to allow for the destruction of hardened structures and the cratering of runways while using smaller yields. (en)

- A W86 foi uma ogiva termonuclear com características de penetração na terra ( uma bunker buster) intentada para uso no MGM-31 Pershing, míssil IRBM. O desenho da W86 foi cancelado em setembro de 1980 quando o Pershing II míssil passou de objetivo, de destruir alvos endurecidos no sub-solo a alvos fáceis na superfície porém a grandes distâncias. A W85, que foi desenvolvida em paralelo com a W86 foi utilizada em todas os mísseis Pershing II produzidos em seu lugar.
