- Viriatos fue el nombre genérico que se dio a los voluntarios portugueses provenientes de la Segunda República portuguesa que lucharon con el bando sublevado durante la guerra civil española. Fueron llamados así en honor del caudillo lusitano Viriato. Unas 869 personas sirvieron dentro de la Legión Española, que se sumaron a los 38 que ya servían en este cuerpo antes del inicio de la guerra con el golpe de Estado del 18 de julio de 1936. Además, hubo tres grupos portugueses de aviación. Sin embargo, otras fuentes dan un número de voluntarios mayor. Según los datos aportados por Antony Beevor 12 000 portugueses participaron. - Die portugiesische Legion Viriato kämpfte während des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges auf der Seite der Nationalisten gegen die spanische Republik. Die Legion wurde nach Viriathus, einem keltiberischen Stammesführer der Lusitaner, benannt. Als in Spanien 1936 der Bürgerkrieg ausbrach, unterstützte der portugiesische Estado Novo den Militärputsch. Zudem erfolgte die Versorgung der spanischen Putschisten mit Kriegsmaterial über Portugal. Bereits in den ersten Wochen des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges sollte eine Truppe, die Legion Viriato, aufgestellt werden und nach Spanien entsandt werden. Nach pro-republikanischen Unruhen in Portugal beschloss die Regierung Salazar, Abstand von einem direkten Eingriff auf das Kriegsgeschehen zu nehmen. Bevor überhaupt eine Mitgliederwerbung für die Legion stattfinden konnte, wurde diese aufgelöst. Unter dem Deckmantel der Neutralität autorisierte die portugiesische Regierung die Rekrutierung von Freiwilligen für die Spanische Legion. Portugiesische Freiwillige, die durch eine groß angelegte Öffentlichkeitskampagne angeworben wurden und für die spanischen Nationalisten kämpften, wurden deshalb als Viriatos bezeichnet. Bis zu 12.000 portugiesische Freiwillige kämpften während des Krieges auf Seiten Francos. Während des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges gab es nie eine autonome portugiesische Kommandostruktur. Bei der Siegesparade Francos in Madrid am 19. Mai 1939 bildete die portugiesische Legion Viriato mit der deutschen Legion Condor die Nachhut. (de)

Leur nombre total ne semble pas avoir dépassé les 4000 hommes. Ils furent nommés ainsi en souvenir du leader lusitanien Viriatus. Ces combattants portugais se distinguèrent et notamment dans les airs avec leurs groupes aériens os Viriatos do Ar, avec des pilotes tels que José Adriano Pequito Rebelo, Sepúlveda Veloso et Simão Aranha. Une fois la guerre civile espagnole terminée, ils participèrent au grand défilé de la victoire organisé à Madrid. Peu restèrent dans les rangs de la Légion étrangère espagnole, la majorité retournant au Portugal. Deux ans plus tard, lors de la formation en Espagne de la division Azul, plusieurs d'entre eux rejoignirent ses rangs ; 159 volontaires portugais ont ainsi été identifiés au sein de la division espagnole. - Viriatos, named after the Lusitanian leader Viriathus, was the generic name given to Portuguese volunteers who fought with the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. In the first weeks of the war, the Portuguese Army tried to form a Viriatos Legion to aid the Nationalist insurgents in Spain. The Legion was disbanded before any recruitment drive could take place after pro-Republican incidents in Portugal had convinced the government that direct intervention on the side of the Nationalists could cause further unrest. The widespread publicity given to the Viriatos Legion made all Portuguese volunteers who later enlisted directly in the Spanish Foreign Legion, Carlist militias, the Falange or regular army units were known as "Viriatos". According to the historian Antony Beevor, 12,000 Portuguese participated. The historian Christopher Othen claims the number to be closer to 8,000. A Portuguese Military Observation Mission with members drawn from all three branches of the Portuguese military was present in Spain from 1937 onwards, with the dual objectives of protecting the interests of Portuguese foreign volunteers and collating information on the lessons learned during the civil war. Although the mission officially had a noncombatant role, its air force contingent took part in combat missions, the aviator José Adriano Pequito Rebelo being a notable member. (en)

Poprzez porty portugalskie płynęło do Hiszpanii uzbrojenie, sprzęt wojskowy i inne materiały. Ponadto władze portugalskie wysłały ok. 10 tys. ochotników, zwanych Legião Viriato, pod dowództwem gen. . Nazwa formacji pochodziła od legendarnego wodza luzytańskiego Wiriatusa, który bronił ziem swojego ludu przed inwazją Rzymian. Część Portugalczyków (ponad 850) wstąpiła do Hiszpańskiej Legii Cudzoziemskiej, niektórzy walczyli w szeregach requetés (monarchistycznych milicji karlistowskich) oraz milicji falangistów. Ochotnicy portugalscy brali udział m.in. w bitwie pod Brunete. Były też 3 grupy lotników portugalskich, którzy wstąpili do hiszpańskiego lotnictwa. Straty portugalskie podczas hiszpańskiej wojny domowej wyniosły ogółem ok. 8 tys. zabitych i rannych. (pl)
