- El Centro Espiritual de Beneficencia de la Unión del Vegetal (Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal o UDV) es una sociedad religiosa fundada el 22 de julio de 1961 por José Gabriel da Costa, o Mestre Gabriel, con el objetivo de promover la paz y “trabajar por la evolución del ser humano en el sentido de su desarrollo espiritual”, conforme consta en su reglamento interno. La institución cuenta hoy con más de 18.000 socios, distribuidos en más de 200 unidades, en todos los estados de Brasil, Perú y algunos países de Europa, América del Norte y Oceanía. En sus sesiones, los asociados beben el té Hoasca, o Ayahuasca, como también es conocido, buscando el efecto de concentración mental. En Brasil, el uso de la Hoasca en rituales religiosos fue reglamentado el 25 de enero de 2010 por el CONAD (Consejo Nacional de Políticas sobre Drogas) del Gobierno Federal Brasileño. Esa reglamentación establece normas legales para las instituciones religiosas que hacen uso responsable del té. La Suprema Corte de Estados Unidos, concedió a la Unión del Vegetal, por unanimidad, el derecho al uso del té Hoasca durante sus sesiones religiosas en todo el territorio estadounidense, en una audiencia realizada el día 21 de febrero de 2006. Además de sus actividades religiosas, la UDV desarrolla también trabajos de beneficencia social. El Gobierno Federal concedió al Centro Espiritual de Beneficencia de la Unión del Vegetal el título de Entidad de Utilidad Pública, en el Diario Oficial de la Unión nº 139, del día 22 de julio de 1999. L'UDV cherche à promouvoir la paix et à « travailler pour l'évolution de l'être humain dans le sens de son développement spirituel », comme il est écrit dans ses statuts. L'institution compte aujourd'hui plus de 18 000 membres, répartis dans plus de 200 chapitres locaux situés dans tous les États du Brésil, ainsi qu'au Pérou, en Australie et dans plusieurs pays en Europe et aux États-Unis. Le "Végétal" se réfère au sacrement de l'UDV, l'ayahuasca ou hoasca. Cette boisson est préparée par l'ébullition de deux plantes, Mariri (Banisteriopsis caapi) et Chacrona (Psychotria viridis), qui sont toutes deux natives de la forêt amazonienne. The UDV seeks to promote peace and to "work for the evolution of the human being in the sense of his or her spiritual development", as is written in its bylaws. The institution today has over 18,000 members, distributed among more than 200 local chapters located in all the states of Brazil, as well as in Peru, Australia, several countries in Europe, and the United States. The translation of União do Vegetal is Union of the Plants referring to the sacrament of the UDV, hoasca tea, also known as ayahuasca. This beverage is made by boiling two plants, mariri (Banisteriopsis caapi) and chacrona (Psychotria viridis), both of which are native to the Amazon rainforest. In its sessions, UDV members drink hoasca tea for the effect of mental concentration. In Brazil, the use of hoasca in religious rituals was regulated by the Brazilian federal government's National Drug Policy Council on January 25, 2010. The policy established legal norms for the religious institutions that responsibly use this tea. The Supreme Court of the United States unanimously affirmed the UDV's right to use hoasca tea in its religious sessions in the United States, in a decision published on February 21, 2006. (en)
