- Die Hochschule für Musik und Theater „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ Leipzig (kurz HMT Leipzig) ist eine staatliche Hochschule in Leipzig und die älteste Musikhochschule in Deutschland. Sie wurde 1843 als Conservatorium der Musik von dem Gewandhauskapellmeister, Komponisten und Pianisten Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) gegründet und entwickelte sich schnell zu einer der renommiertesten Institutionen ihrer Art in Europa. Die HMT beherbergt auch das traditionsreiche Kirchenmusikalische Institut (K.I.), das 1919 der Thomaskantor und Organist Karl Straube (1873–1950) gegründet hatte. Zu Ehren ihres Gründers trug sie mit der Wiedereröffnung im Jahr 1946 den Namen Staatliche Hochschule für Musik – Mendelssohn-Akademie (ab 1972 Hochschule für Musik „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“). Nach Integration der Theaterhochschule „Hans Otto“ Leipzig, der ersten Theaterhochschule Deutschlands, trägt sie seit 1992 ihren heutigen Namen.
