The nine original states that formed the confederation were Antioquia, Bolivar, Boyaca, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panama, Santander and Tolima, and the territories of Caquetá, San Martin, Nevada and Motilones. After several years of intermittent civil wars, in 1886 the party led by Rafael Núñez proclaimed a new constitution of centralist character that abolished the United States of Colombia and created the Republic of Colombia.
