The Tucker 48, commonly referred to as the Tucker Torpedo, was an automobile conceived by Preston Tucker while in Ypsilanti, Michigan and briefly produced in Chicago, Illinois in 1948. Only 51 cars were made including their prototype before the company was forced to declare bankruptcy and cease all operations on March 3, 1949, due to negative publicity initiated by the news media, a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation, and a heavily publicized stock fraud trial (in which the allegations were proven baseless and led to a full acquittal). Tucker suspected that the Big Three automakers and Michigan Senator Homer S. Ferguson had a role in the Tucker Corporation's demise.

De auto wordt ook wel "Tucker Torpedo" genoemd. Preston Tucker was bouwer van raceauto's en autoverkoper toen hij het plan kreeg een revolutionaire nieuwe auto te ontwikkelen. Het moest een familieauto worden met achterin geplaatste motor, waarmee meer ruimte in het interieur ontstond. In de Verenigde Staten was dat alleen al een revolutie, tot dan toe waren daar geen auto's met achterin geplaatste motor gebouwd. Voor de Tucker 48 was de Maikäfer van Jozef Ganz de eerste met dit concept. Daarnaast waren er vergaande ideeën over veiligheid: zo zou de voorruit bij een aanrijding naar buiten schieten, de auto zou worden voorzien van een met de stuurrichting meedraaiende middenvoorlamp, en dashboard en stuur zouden met zachte materialen worden bekleed. Het project had te lijden onder vertragingen in het ontwerp en de bouw, en van de concessies die Tucker moest doen om toch de productie op gang te krijgen. Dit effect werd versterkt door de media, waardoor Tucker ook problemen kreeg met het verkrijgen van de financiën. Preston Tucker werd zelfs aangeklaagd wegens fraude, maar werd in een rechtszaak vrijgesproken. Tussentijds werden de 51 Tucker 48s door loyale werknemers afgebouwd, nadat 1600 arbeiders wegens de moeilijke financiën waren ontslagen. Verder dan de 51 gebouwde auto's is het nooit gekomen. De meeste van deze auto's bestaan nog, en zijn in handen van verzamelaars en musea. In 1988 maakte Francis Ford Coppola (zelf bezitter van een Tucker 48), een film over Preston Tucker en de gang van zaken rondom de Tucker 48. Seu perfil baixo e aerodinâmico propiciava uma velocidade máxima de 193 km/h, tracionado por um motor de seis cilindros e 168 cv de potência. Possuía um terceiro farol no centro que vira acompanhando a direção do volante, para ajudar a iluminar nas curvas. Um dos exemplas construídos e encontrado num galpão no estado americano de Ohio, em 2016, foi avaliado para leilão em R$ 10 milhões. Em 2015, um colecionador, que adquiriu um chassi original num leilão da massa falida da Tucker Car Corporation, completou a montagem do automóvel com peças sobressalentes e partes de outras unidades danificadas por acidente, tornando-se assim a 52º unidade fabricada do Tucker 48. Систему непосредственного впрыска заменили двумя карбюраторами. Экземпляр мог развивать скорость до 200 км/час, тогда как за 10 секунд достигал скорости в 100 км/час.
