Lze si ji představit jako methoxyskupinu (–O–CH3), u níž jsou všechny tři vodíkové atomy nahrazeny atomy fluoru, nebo jako trifluormethylovou skupinu, která je na hlavní řetězec připojena přes atom kyslíku.
