Canadeo a d'abord commencé le football au sein de l'équipe universitaire de Gonzaga où il fut surnommé « le fantôme gris de Gonzaga » (The Gray Ghost of Gonzaga) en raison de l'apparition prématurée de cheveux gris. Il a ensuite poursuivi une carrière professionnelle en étant sélectionné par les Packers en 77e position (9e tour) de la draft 1941. Il a dû interrompre sa carrière en 1945 pour servir dans l'armée durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale mais a retrouvé son équipe dès 1946 où il s'impose comme running back titulaire. En 1949 il fut le premier joueur des Packers à franchir les 1000 yards à la course (1052) en une saison, un exploit qui n'avait été accompli que deux fois précédemment dans l'histoire de la NFL. Canadeo est l'un des cinq joueurs des Packers de Green Bay à voir son numéro retiré par l'équipe. Son numéro (3) a été retiré immédiatement en 1952, précédée par Don Hutson (14) en 1951, et suivi par Bart Starr (15) en 1973, Ray Nitschke (66) en 1983, et Reggie White (92) en 2005. Après sa carrière de joueur, Canadeo a poursuivi sa collaboration avec l'équipe en tant que diffuseur et membre du comité exécutif. Tony Canadeo a été intronisé au Pro Football Hall of Fame en 1974. - Anthony Robert Canadeo (May 5, 1919 – November 29, 2003) was a professional American football player who played as a back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Green Bay Packers from 1941 to 1952, having missed most of the 1944 season and the entire 1945 season while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, he attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, played football for the Bulldogs, and earned the nickname "Gray Ghost of Gonzaga". Canadeo was selected by the Packers in the 1941 NFL Draft. Before the war, Canadeo was a triple-threat halfback for the Packers, leading the team in rushing and passing in 1943. When he returned from the war in 1946, he served primarily as a running back, and in 1949 became the third player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 or more yards in a season. He retired as the Packers' all-time rushing yards leader, and as of 2018 ranks fourth in franchise history in that category. Canadeo's number 3 was retired by the Packers immediately following his retirement as a player. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. After his playing career, Canadeo worked as a color commentator for CBS television, covering Packers games with Ray Scott. He also was a long-time member of the Green Bay Packers, Inc. Board of Directors and Executive Committee, most notably during the Vince Lombardi era. Canadeo died in 2003 at the age of 84. (en)
