- The 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot was a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives, carried aboard airliners travelling from the United Kingdom to the United States and Canada, disguised as soft drinks. The plot was discovered by British Metropolitan police during an extensive surveillance operation. As a result of the plot, unprecedented security measures were initially implemented at airports. The measures were gradually relaxed during the following weeks, but passengers are still not allowed to carry liquid containers larger than 100 ml onto commercial aircraft in their hand luggage in the UK and most other countries, as of 2022. Of 24 suspects who were arrested in and around London on the night of 9 August 2006, eight were tried initially for terrorism offences associated with the plot. The first trial occurred from April to September 2008. The jury failed to reach a verdict on charges of conspiracy to kill by blowing up aircraft but did find three men guilty of conspiracy to murder and acquitted one other of all charges. During September 2009, a second trial (of the now seven originally accused but with the addition of another man) found three men guilty of conspiracy to kill by blowing up aircraft and one other guilty of conspiracy to murder, while the 'additional' man was exonerated of all terrorism charges. During July 2010, a further three of the accused were found guilty at a third trial at Woolwich Crown Court of conspiracy to murder. Thus, of the nine men tried, two were acquitted and seven found guilty of conspiracy charges. (en)
- Le Metropolitan Police Service a annoncé par voie de presse au matin du 10 août 2006 que Scotland Yard avait déjoué un complot terroriste visant 10 avions de ligne au Royaume-Uni à destination de l'Amérique du Nord. Le projet des terroristes était de faire exploser simultanément dix avions de ligne à destination d'aéroports nord-américains, au moyen d'explosifs liquides emmenés en cabine comme bagage à main, en l'occurrence dans des biberons d'enfants en bas âge. Les arrestations se sont déroulées alors que les suspects s'apprêtaient à effectuer une répétition générale sur l'aéroport de Londres Heathrow dans le but d'évaluer le niveau des mesures de sûreté au filtre d'inspection filtrage. Cette annonce a été accompagnée dans la capitale britannique et sur les aéroports anglais, nord-américains, européens d'un durcissement des mesures liées à un risque imminent d'attentat, ce qui causa l'annulation d'un nombre considérable de vols et ce en pleine période estivale. Sur les 82 personnes arrêtées, 24 l'ont été dans Londres et sa banlieue au cours de la nuit du 9 août 2006. 58 personnes (principalement des femmes) ont été disculpées étant donné l'impossibilité qu'il y avait de prouver qu'elles avaient connaissance du complot et du rôle qu’elles devaient effectivement jouer. 11 de ces personnes furent mises en examen le 21 août pour tentative d'attentat et association de malfaiteur dans le cadre d'une entreprise terroriste. 2 autres accusés furent mis en cause le 25 août 2006, (disculpés le 1er novembre) puis 3 autres le 30 août 2006. Il a été démontré que huit des mis en cause ont été poursuivis dans le cadre de ce complot pour association de malfaiteurs et atteinte à la sûreté de l'État. Leur procès commencé en avril 2008 s'est achevé en septembre 2008. Le jury n'a pas réussi à déterminer la nature des charges établissant l'ampleur de la tentative terroriste pour assassinat par explosion de 10 aéronefs commerciaux, toutefois le tribunal a établi formellement que 3 des accusés étaient coupables de tentative d'assassinat. En septembre 2009, un second procès (des 8 hommes à l'exception de Gulzar, mais avec Donald Stewart-Whyte) a bien confirmé qu'Ali, Sarwar et Hussain étaient coupables d'avoir organisé et mise en œuvre le complot terroriste. Il progetto fu scoperto dalla polizia britannica: subito dopo la fine delle indagini, furono emanate misure di sicurezza più restrittive, che, per le linee aeree, causarono gravi disagi. Le restrizioni vennero, in seguito, gradualmente ridotte nelle settimane successive, tuttavia le possibilità dei passeggeri di trasportare liquidi sugli aerei di linea rimane tuttora limitata. Dei circa 24 sospetti arrestati nei dintorni di Londra la notte del 9 agosto 2006, undici, il 21 agosto, sono stati accusati di atti terroristici, due, il 25 agosto, e successivamente scarcerati il 1º novembre, e altri tre, il 30 agosto. Alla fine, solo 8 uomini furono ritenuti coinvolti nel complotto: Abd Allah Ahmad Ali, Asad Sarwar, Tanvir Husayn, Ibrahim Savant, 27 anni, di Stoke Newington, Arafat Wahid Khan, 27 anni, di Londra, Wahid Zaman, 24 anni, di Walthamstow, Umar Islam, 30 anni, di Plaistow, Mohammed Gulzar, 27 anni, di Barking, East London. - Op 10 augustus 2006 verklaarde de Londense politie dat zij een serie geplande aanslagen op trans-Atlantische vluchten had verijdeld. De politie verklaarde dat het doel was negen tot twaalf vliegtuigen op te blazen tijdens hun vlucht over de Atlantische Oceaan. Volgens Amerikaanse bronnen zou de bedoeling van de daders zijn geweest drie uur lang steeds drie vliegtuigen op te blazen. Ze zouden daarvoor vloeibare chemicaliën en een ontstekingsmechanisme uit onderdelen van een iPod hebben willen gebruiken die zich hadden moeten bevinden in de handbagage en die tijdens de vlucht geprepareerd zouden worden. Bij de reeks huiszoekingen zouden explosieven zijn gevonden en zeker één video-opname waarin een van de verdachten de aanslagen opeiste. (nl)
- Akcja antyterrorystyczna – przeprowadzona 10 sierpnia 2006 roku przez brytyjski Scotland Yard operacja antyterrorystyczna, w wyniku której zatrzymano 24 osoby. Zatrzymani mieli wziąć udział w przygotowaniu zamachów terrorystycznych w samolotach pasażerskich. Zamachowcy mieli prawdopodobnie w planach wnieść na pokład zupełnie nieszkodliwe, pospolite przedmioty, jak na przykład dezodoranty, czy napoje i połączyć je za pomocą reakcji chemicznej w materiały wybuchowe i odpalić je jednocześnie na samolotach w czasie lotu. Większość zatrzymanych było Brytyjczykami pochodzenia pakistańskiego. Dwóch z zatrzymanych było młodymi rodowitymi Brytyjczykami od niedawna wyznającymi islam. (pl)
