- Tigre fou una província d'Etiòpia. La regió de Tigre que va substituir la província, fou creada per la constitució de 1995. El seu nom tradicional és Tigre però el nom modern és «Tigray», més apropiat, ja que correspon al país dels tigranya de llengua trigranyà, mentre que «Tigre» seria el nom del país dels tigres de la part central d'Eritrea, que parlen el tigre (ambdós pobles estan emparentats). Fins a la meitat del segle xix fou sempre anomenada Tigre, però després es va acabar imposant el nom Tigray avui generalitzat. La província de Tigre va quedar establerta per la proclamació núm. 1 de 1943 de l'emperador Haile Selassie que va fundar dotze províncies o governs generals amb les 42 províncies anteriors que eren de mides molt variades; la vella província de Tigre tal com existia al segle xix, fou unida a les veïnes (províncies de , , i i va formar la província de Tigre o Tigray que va existir formalment fins al 1995 (del 1987 al 1991 va formar una regió autònoma però sense virtualitat i mai reconeguda pel nou govern etíop establert el maig del 1991). - Tigray (ትግራይ təgray [tɨɡraj], auch Tigré) war eine Provinz im Kaiserreich Abessinien, ab 1974 eine Provinz Äthiopiens unter dem Derg-Regime. In der Demokratischen Volksrepublik Äthiopien ab 1987 war sie autonom und seit 1995 ist sie durch die Annahme der neuen Verfassung eine eigenständige Region – die Region Tigray, und keine Provinz – innerhalb der Demokratischen Bundesrepublik Äthiopien. Die Hauptstadt war Mek’ele. Zur Zeit ihrer Auflösung wurden mehrere historische Provinzen, darunter Semien, , und , mit ihr zur Tigray-Region vereinigt. Die Region um die Tigrinya-sprachigen Gebiete und (Wolkait) gegen Süden und Westen gehörten bis dahin nicht zur Provinz Tigray, sie wurde von der separatistischen Volksbefreiungsfront von Tigray beansprucht und gehörten bislang zu den Provinzen Wollo und Begemder (Gondar). - Tigray Province (Amharic and Tigrinya: ትግራይ), also known as Tigre (Amharic: ትግሬ tigrē), was a historical province of northern Ethiopia that overlayed the present day Afar and Tigray regions. Akele Guzai borders with the Tigray province It was one It encompassed most of the territories of Tigrinya-speakers (and a few minority groups) in Ethiopia. Tigray was separated from the northern Tigrinya speaking territories by the Mareb River, now serving as the state border to Eritrea (formerly Eritrea Province), with the Tekezé River separating it from the Amhara dominated south. The great majority of inhabitants were Orthodox Christians (95.5% in 1994), with the exception of a small, but important Muslim subgroup (Jeberti) and a few Catholics (mainly Irob). Protestantism is only a very recent urban phenomenon. Despite a general impression of ethnic and cultural homogeneity, there were a few ethnic minorities, especially at the borders of Tigray, belonging to a non-Tigrinya groups, such as the Saho-speaking Irob at the north-eastern border to Eritrea, the in the south-east, the Agaw-speaking H̬amta in Abergele north of Wag, a few Kunama in the Habesha Kunama woreda east of Humera, and scattered peripheral groups in the western lowlands across the tekeze, such as the Chare of the Sellim Bet (related with the Gumuz) and Tukrir in the Humera area. Tigray went through numerous administrative changes in the course of its history. In 1991 Tigray was radically reshaped. During the reign of Haile Selassie I and also the following Derg period, Tigray did not yet encompass Welqayt (until 1991 having been part of Begemder), while Enderta in eastern Tigray extended over large Afar areas including the salt plains, which were given to Afar kəlləl. Still, in the 1930s the regions south of Enderta, i.e. Wajjarat and Angot, formed the separate governorate called "Southern Tigray". Tigray is the result of a merger of diverse historical northern provinces (with Tigrinya and Agaw speakers), which were often independent from each other. (en)
