- Théophile Marie François Lybaert, né le 14 juin 1848 à Gand où il est mort le 28 mai 1927, est un peintre et sculpteur belge. Il commence sa carrière comme peintre de scènes de genre et de sujets orientalistes. Il peint ensuite des sujets de l'histoire nationale et internationale, de la vie militaire et de la Bible. Il est principalement connu pour ses peintures religieuses exécutées dans un style gothique archaïque qui reprend les modèles du XVIe siècle des maîtres nord-européens tels que Hans Memling et Albrecht Dürer. Ces œuvres lui ont valu l'appellation de « gothique moderne » ou de « Memling contemporain ». Dans une période finale à partir des années 1910, il développe vers un style éclectique incorporant le symbolisme. (fr)

He commenced his career as a painter of genre and Orientalist scenes. He later painted subjects from the national and international history, military life and the bible. He was mainly known for his religious paintings executed in an archaic, Gothic style that reprised the 16th century models of Northern-European masters such as Hans Memling and Albrecht Dürer. These works earned him the appelation of 'modern Gothic' or 'contemporary Memling'. In a final period starting from the 1910s he developed towards an eclectic style incorporating Symbolism. (en)
- Théophile Lybaert (Gent, 14 juni 1848 - aldaar, 1927) was een Belgisch kunstschilder en beeldhouwer. Lybaert was een leerling van Jean-Léon Gérôme, een aanhanger van het Franse neoclassicisme. Het werk van Lybaert is sterk beïnvloed door dat van zijn leermeester. Lybaerts kunstwerken behoren tot de historieschilderkunst en het Oriëntalisme. Lybaert volgde ook les bij Théodore-Joseph Canneel en aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent waar Canneel een tijdlang directeur was. Lybaert kreeg de opdracht om de muurschilderingen in de Sint-Annakerk te Gent te voltooien na het overlijden van Canneel. (nl)
