Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic is the twenty-third studio album by American recording artist Prince, who was at the time going by the unpronounceable "Love Symbol" (as shown on the album cover). Released on November 9, 1999 by NPG Records and Arista Records, the album was issued shortly after the release of The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale (1999). It includes several guest appearances, including by Gwen Stefani, Eve, and Sheryl Crow; Prince also completed a cover of Crow's 1996 single "Everyday Is a Winding Road". A pop and R&B album, it departs from the soul genre found on Prince's previous efforts.

Aufgrund von Differenzen mit Warner Bros. Records hatte er 1993 seinen Künstlernamen abgelegt und nahm ihn erst im Mai 2000 wieder an. Zum ersten Mal seit 1996 arbeitete Prince wieder mit einem Major-Label zusammen, seine vorherigen Alben vertrieb er über sein eigenes Label NPG Records. Die Musik zählt zu den Genres Contemporary R&B, Funk, Pop und Rock. Einige der Liedtexte können als Anspielung auf Prince’ damalige Ehefrau Mayte Garcia interpretiert werden, mit der er im Jahr 1999 eine Krise hatte und sich von ihr im Mai 2000 scheiden ließ. Ansonsten greift er Themen auf, die er bereits in seinen Songs der 1990er behandelt: Affären, Liebe, sexuelle Anzüglichkeiten, zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen sowie Vorwürfe gegen die Musikindustrie. Als musikalischen Gäste wirken Ani DiFranco, Chuck D, Clare Fischer, Eve, Gwen Stefani, Larry Graham, Maceo Parker und Sheryl Crow mit, von der Prince auf dem Album eine Coverversion eines Songs veröffentlichte; Coverversionen brachte er in seiner Karriere sehr selten auf einer seiner Studioalben heraus. Verglichen mit anderen Prince-Alben erhielt Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic überwiegend zurückhaltendes Lob von Musikkritikern. In kommerzieller Hinsicht erreichte Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic zwar Goldstatus in den USA, in den Top 20 internationaler Charts war das Album aber kaum zu finden. Eine Tournee zum Album absolvierte Prince nicht, trat aber im Rahmen einer Werbekampagne für zwei Wochen in Europa auf. Dabei hatte er auch drei Fernsehauftritte in Deutschland, was weder vorher noch danach wieder vorkam. Über die Zusammenarbeit mit Arista Records war Prince sehr enttäuscht und machte vor allem Clive Davis dafür verantwortlich. By the end of 1999, the album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album's first and only single, "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold", peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the album's only song to chart. Second and third singles, duets "So Far, So Pleased" and "Hot Wit' U", were planned for released in summer 2000, but were both cancelled after the album's lukewarm commercial success. Instead, two promotional singles were released, "Baby Knows" and "Man'O'War".
