- Schnee auf dem Kilimandscharo ist eine Kurzgeschichte von Ernest Hemingway, die im August 1936 unter dem englischen Titel The Snows of Kilimanjaro im Esquire erstveröffentlicht und 1938 in die Sammlung The Fifth Column and the First Forty-nine Stories aufgenommen wurde. Die Erzählung ist seitdem mehrfach anthologisiert worden. Die einzig autorisierte Übertragung ins Deutsche stammt von Annemarie Horschitz-Horst und erschien zuerst 1949 zusammen mit weiteren Hemingway-Erzählungen parallel im Steinberg-Verlag Zürich und im Rowohlt-Verlag Hamburg. Allein die Rowohlt-Ausgaben erreichten von 1961 bis 1999 eine Auflagenhöhe von insgesamt 359.000 Exemplaren. 1952 wurde die Geschichte von Henry King verfilmt. Mit Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner und Hildegard Knef in den Hauptrollen wurde der Film ein Hollywood-Klassiker (siehe Schnee am Kilimandscharo). 1997 erschien ein von Otto Sander gelesenes Hörbuch. - The Snows of Kilimanjaro is een kort verhaal van de Amerikaanse schrijver Ernest Hemingway. Het verhaal werd eerst gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift Esquire in 1936, en werd daarna opgenomen in The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories (1938), The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories (1961), en in (1987). Het verhaal weerspiegelt een aantal van Hemingways eigen zorgen in de jaren 1930 over zijn bestaan als schrijver en zijn leven in het algemeen. Het verhaal speelt zich af in Afrika. Harry Street, een schrijver, is tijdens een safari gewond geraakt aan zijn been, en de daaropvolgende ontsteking is zo ernstig dat hij aan de voet van de Kilimanjaro zijn dood moet afwachten, intussen terugblikkend op zijn leven. Door middel van de stream of consciousnesstechniek worden de gevoelens van de romanschrijver die aan gangreen sterft beschreven. Hemingway beschouwde The Snows of Kilimanjaro als zijn mooiste verhaal. (nl)
