- Fegefeuer der Eitelkeiten (Originaltitel englisch The Bonfire of the Vanities, erschienen 1987 bei Farrar, Strauß & Giroux, New York) ist das wohl wichtigste und bekannteste Werk des amerikanischen Schriftstellers Tom Wolfe. Es erschien zuerst von Juli 1984 bis August 1985 als Fortsetzungsroman in der Zeitschrift Rolling Stone. 1990 wurde der Roman von Brian De Palma verfilmt. Der Titel wurde Savonarolas „falò delle vanità“ entlehnt; dieser ließ im Florenz des späten 15. Jahrhunderts Scheiterhaufen errichten, auf denen er als eitel und unzüchtig angesehene Gegenstände verbrannte, die er aus der Bevölkerung einsammeln lassen hatte. - La hoguera de las vanidades (en inglés, The Bonfire of the Vanities) es una novela del escritor estadounidense Tom Wolfe, publicada en 1987, una sátira sobre las costumbres de la sociedad de Nueva York en la década de 1980 en la que se recrea el universo de los adinerados ejecutivos de finanzas y sus interacciones con el resto de la sociedad. El título se inspira en la Hoguera de las vanidades, evento histórico ocurrido en Florencia, Italia, a fines del siglo XV. Con ello, Wolfe trataba de explicar hasta qué punto el dinero y la fama resultan inútiles para salvar a un individuo cuando se reúnen en su contra situaciones y circunstancias desfavorables, para lo cual emplea como "fondo histórico" la sociedad neoyorquina de los años 80, mostrando un cuadro de hipocresía y juego de apariencias en el cual las convenciones sociales cambian de acuerdo a las conveniencias del momento. Esta fue la primera novela de Tom Wolfe, autor dedicado hasta entonces al periodismo y al ensayo. Debido al éxito de público, la novela fue luego adaptada al cine con título homónimo en 1990, dirigida por Brian De Palma y protagonizada por Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks y Melanie Griffith. (es)

The novel was originally conceived as a serial in the style of Charles Dickens' writings: it ran in 27 installments in Rolling Stone starting in 1984. Wolfe heavily revised it before it was published in book form. The novel was a bestseller and a phenomenal success, even in comparison with Wolfe's other books. It has often been called the quintessential novel of the 1980s, and in 1990 was adapted into a critically maligned film of the same name by Brian De Palma. (en)
