- Al curs de la història, la noció geogràfica i política dels Països Baixos ha tingut diverses significacions que causen sovint confusió. En contextos informals, sovint es fa servir el nom «Holanda». Tanmateix, en realitat, Holanda només és una de les diverses regions que conformen l'estat sobirà dels Països Baixos. A causa de la seva preeminència econòmica i històrica, sovint es fa servir el nom d'aquesta regió per referir-se als Països Baixos en el seu conjunt. Tot i que estrictament no és incorrecta, aquesta denominació és imprecisa, pot resultar ofensiva per als neerlandesos provinents d'altres regions del país i és comparable a l'ús incorrecte del nom «Anglaterra» per referir-se al Regne Unit. - La nación europea occidental de los Países Bajos suele ser común e informalmente conocida en español como Holanda, aunque no obstante esta última es una denominación técnicamente imprecisa y por lo tanto impropia. El Diccionario panhispánico de dudas reconoce como frecuente y admisible su uso para designar a todo el país, aunque no en documentos oficiales. Lo mismo sucede en otros idiomas indoeuropeos como el inglés, francés y portugués, en los que las respectivas denominaciones Holland, Hollande y Holanda son preferidas a Netherlands, Pays-Bas y Países Baixos. Por ejemplo, la entrada Holland de la guía de estilo de los periódicos británicos The Guardian y The Observer afirma que: “No usarla cuando quiere(s) decir ‘Países Bajos’ (de los cuales es una región), con la excepción del equipo de fútbol holandés, quienes son convencionalmente conocidos como Holanda”. Sin embargo, la FIFA, no contempla el uso de Holanda, sino que se refiere a esta selección de fútbol por su nombre real que es Países Bajos, con lo cual desmiente lo que esos dos periódicos británicos afirman. De hecho, "Holanda" es solo una de las regiones que conforman los Países Bajos (de los cuales abarca un 16,24 % de su superficie total y al 1 de enero de 2011 representaba un 37,34 % de su población), la cual se encuentra dividida entre las provincias de Holanda del Norte u Holanda Septentrional (Noord-Holland) y Holanda del Sur u Holanda Meridional (Zuid-Holland). Sin embargo, el 5 de octubre de 2019, los Países Bajos iniciaron una campaña para que su país deje de ser llamado erróneamente Holanda. The Low Countries—and the Netherlands and Belgium—had in their history exceptionally many and widely varying names, resulting in equally varying names in different languages. There is diversity even within languages: the use of one word for the country and another for the adjective form is common. This holds for English, where Dutch is the adjective form for the country "the Netherlands". * Germania Inferior: historische benaming voor de Lage Landen (vooral de noordelijke), gangbaar in de middeleeuwse Kerk, sinds de 16e eeuw in onbruik geraakt.
* Lage Landen: geografische benaming van bovengenoemde Benelux, afhankelijk van context soms breder opgevat met ook delen van Noord-Frankrijk (Frans-Vlaanderen, Frans-Henegouwen, Artesië, Picardië tot aan de Somme en de vroeger Luxemburgse streek rond Diedenhoven) en West-Duitsland (Oost-Friesland, Gulik, Kleef, Bentheim, Lingen, de streek rond Geldern, rond Bitburg, enkele gemeenten ten oosten van de Oostkantons die in 1815 door Pruisen werden geannexeerd enz.). * Lotharingia: van de 10e tot 12e eeuw elitaire benaming van Neder-Lotharingen dat een groot deel van de latere Nederlanden omvatte; vrij onbekend laat staan gangbaar bij het gewone volk.
* Nederlanden: ongeveer dezelfde betekenis als de Lage Landen, maar meer historiografisch en politiek van aard.
