  • Telecom Italia is the largest Italian telephone company. Now a private company, it was founded in 1994 by the merger of several state-owned telecommunications companies, the most important of which was SIP, the monopoly telephone operator. The company operates landline telephone services in Italy, GSM mobile phone services in Italy and Brazil under the name TIM, and DSL internet and telephony services under the brand Alice in Italy, Germany, France, San Marino and the Netherlands. It also owns a stake in Telecom Argentina in Argentina. Its subsidiary Telecom Italia Media also controls three Italian TV networks: La7, MTV Italy, and QOOB. On December 13, 2006, Telecom Italia suffered a widespread DNS outage. Newspapers including La Repubblica printed instructions on how users could switch their DNS service to OpenDNS to restore service. (en)

Telecom Italia est né de la fusion en juillet 1999 de ce dernier avec la société Olivetti. Selon des clients mécontents, Telecom Italia, issue d'une grande entreprise nationalisée, détient un quasi-monopole en Italie et, en dépit de « modernisations » comme la suppression de ses agences, et la réduction de son personnel, fonctionne comme auparavant, reposant sur l'esprit très particulier de la bureaucratie italienne. Das Unternehmen setzte 2005 mit seinen 86. 000 Mitarbeitern in neun Ländern 30 Mrd. Euro um und erzielte einen Nettogewinn von 3,2 Mrd Euro.
