- La bunionette, ou Tailor's bunion en anglais, est une affection causée par une inflammation sur l'os du cinquième métatarse à la base du petit orteil. Elle est similaire à l'hallux valgus, un problème affectant le gros orteil. Elle est appelée ainsi car, au siècle dernier, les tailleurs s'asseyaient les jambes croisées et on croyait alors que c'était la cause de cette saillie de la face externe du pied. Elle est aussi connue sous les noms de métatarsalgie, kératose plantaire intraitable, oignon du couturier, ou encore quintus varus. La bunionette est habituellement caractérisée par une inflammation, de la douleur et une rougeur à la base du petit orteil. Souvent, la bunionette est causée par une structure défaillante du pied, sorte de malformation congénitale. L'os du cinquième métatarse commence à se déplacer et dépasser vers l'extérieur, tandis que le petit orteil se déplace vers l'intérieur. Ce changement d'alignement crée un élargissement du côté externe du pied. La bunionette est facilement diagnostiquée, car la saillie est apparente. Des radiographies peuvent être prescrites afin d'aider le chirurgien à déterminer l'ampleur de la déformation. (fr)
- Tailor's bunion is a condition caused as a result of inflammation of the fifth metatarsal bone at the base of the little toe. It is usually characterized by inflammation, pain and redness of the little toe. Often a tailor's bunion is caused by a faulty mechanical structure of the foot. The fifth metatarsal bone starts to protrude outward, while the little toe moves inward. This change in alignment creates an enlargement on the outside of the foot. It is mostly similar to a bunion (the same type of ailment affecting the big toe). It is called Tailor's bunion because in past centuries, tailors sat cross-legged, and this was thought to cause this protrusion on the outside aspect of the foot. Patients will present with a history of pain of the lateral bunion, plantar callous, and pain that increases with constrictive shoe wear. Studies have shown that tight shoe wear can cause both bunions as well as Tailor's bunions. (en)
